Edmund Gosse was the son of a naval officer. He was born in London and educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was the father of two children and died in 1916, at the age of fifty-two, as a result of diabetes. He published his first book in 1878, but his major works were written between 1881 and 1905.
